Sprouting Sprouts at home is very easy and, to be honest, the benefits of sprouts and why you should be adding them daily to your diet, is a no brainer! Plus, sprouting at home can ensure you are getting the highest quality and freshest product.

What Is Sprouting?

Sprouting is a process where seeds are germinated and then either eaten raw, or cooked in a variety of foods. There are a lot of seeds that can be used for sprouting, grasses, grains and beans. There are also many health and nutritional benefits that can be obtained from sprouting.

Dry seeds become fresh sprouts in a matter of days so, if you have access to good quality, clean seeds suitable for sprouting, it becomes possible to enjoy fresh sprouts year-round.

I use trays with organic mats in them, but you can also use a glass Mason jar with breathable fabric sheeting over the mouth. The seeds are typically rinsed twice a day and left at room temperature, either inside a dark place or with some sun, depending on the plant. In just a few days, sprouts will begin to form, the seeds will show little “tails.” Most are ready for consumption within 3-10 days and boy are they yummy!

I add my Sprouts to tossed salads, on sandwiches, thrown into juices or, frankly, the best is right out of the container!

What can I sprout?

I know when I first starting Sprouting I thought of Mung bean sprouts, because I see them on the shelve in my local market all the time. As time went on, I found you can also sprout the following (remember you can sprout almost any whole grain or seed):

• wheat
• brown rice
• broccoli
• lentils
• beans
• sunflower seeds
• buckwheat
• quinoa
• radish
• pumpkin seeds
• peas

So there you have it, try sprouting at home. There are many sites that will give you more information on how to do it and the time it takes. I highly recommend you take a chance on this and try it… you will never have to buy them again!
