Isn’t it TIME for CHANGE?

Well, I believe that it is finally that time of year… It is the new year! 2021 is here and I have decided that this is going to be a great year.  No matter what is going I am plan on making the best of it!

The first thing I do every year either on the 30th or 31st just before the first of the year I pick a word for the year, a word that I can always refer back to, to remind me of my goals for the year!  Oh, and to be honest this past year got so crazy for me that I forget what my word was, whoops.  So, for the last couple days I have seriously been thinking about my word for the coming year 2021.  I tried all I could to pick one, but I have decided that there is a first time for everything and so this year I have decided to pick 2 words… EMPOWERMENT and FOREGIVENESS.  Both words to me are powerful for sure but to me they signal Growth and Movement.  Growth for oneself, living my truths and becoming the me I want to be, none of which could happened without forgiveness, understanding and the love of oneself for that matter!

The second thing I do is I ALWAYS ask myself during the last few days of a year if “it is time to make changes”.  I always giggle at myself because, if you know me then you know I am ALWAYS making changes, but am I always making changes that “is for a better me or changes that are for a more enhanced me!  I find the key word here is enhanced!

Listen, reality is, every New Year people make “New Year’s Resolutions”.  People say I am going to lose weight… I am going to be happier…. I am going to make up with my kids… I am going to take a trip… I am going to learn a new trade… or I am going to get a new job…. Sound familiar? Of course, it does we have all done this.

But here is the kicker…. None of, us, including me, will ever get any of these “Resolutions” done unless we actually confront why we have not been successful at this “resolution concept” before and then take the time to make a plan and put it into effect.  Few people understand WHY these resolutions don’t work. But the reason is simple: They are too broad, there is to long of a time line, there is no accountability and well, there are too many distractions.

New Year’s resolutions fail because:

  • They’re unspecific. We say “I want to get healthy this year” but when faced with the birthday parties, the overtime, or the family vacations, that goal gets sets aside to birthday cake, fast food and midnight buffets.
  • They’re unrealistic. “I want to work out at the gym 5x/week.” Is this even possible if you actually went to the gym once a month last year? Setting unrealistic goals is the fastest way to failure.

Failing at your resolutions has implications and those are bad bad bad. Failing means you start to not trust yourself.  Think about that… If you have set the same resolutions for say the last 2  years, and you never follow through, what makes you think it will be different this year?

And yet every year, you set a resolution prefacing it with, “Ok, this year I’m going to buckle down” or “OK this year, I am going to get serious about ____ this time,” you kind of know that you are not actually going to do it. Listen I have done this for years I am right there with you!’

Having a goal isn’t enough you need a plan and a system.

Here’s an example…

“New Year’s Resolution #1” – I am going to be happier  – I realize that I have let life “take over”, I have allowed all the craziness of things I have no control over run my life and I have not taken any steps to really change things for the better.  Not because I am a victim but because I have not decided to take the reins and instead have been playing catch up which gets me NO WHERE.

Solutions:

  1. Every Morning I will look in the mirror and remind myself, I got this and smile at myself (even if I don’t feel like it) because… I am worth it!

“Force yourself to smile and you’ll soon stop frowning.”

  1. Everyday NO MATTER what is going on, whether I feel happy or sad I will take the time to do something for someone to show them life is good.

A smile appears to have this strange, power.  When you are smiling, it is very hard to be down or angry.  Your mood usually changes immediately from yucky to I CAN DO THIS.  Even when you find you have to force a smile, it does wonders…  Smiling changes, the outlook of your day and it can change someone else’s too! I will keep a smile “ometer” every day to keep this goal in check!

  1. I will do something just for me every week. It does not matter if it is a scoop of ice cream, an hour to read a good book, or a phone call to my best friend just for shitz and giggles but I will do something.  This will help remind me that I am deserving of being happy!

Ok so I think you got the point here.  Resolutions are great, but they are better if you have a plan! It can change your world for a better you and can push you to the next level of greatness!  Take a few moments, allow yourself to be honest with you, be willing to take a chance to enhance and try it… you might be surprised!
