I remember growing up listening to stories from my grandmother about her family, growing up being one of 8 children and all of their adventures. I also remember my father telling me (and he still does daily btw) that he wanted to write his memoir so he could share information about his life with others.
I think everyone at one time, or another has enjoyed telling stories about their life story. When this happens everyone seems to listen because of the draw it has to family history and future traditions, adventures, tragedy and love!
When I wrote my first book, I wrote it for the sole purpose of my kids reading it. Reality was I did not think anyone else would read it. But Ill tell you one thing that was for sure, it was very satisfying, and healing to tell my story no matter who ready it! To my surprise many read it, loved it and let me know how it inspired them.
Only downside to this writing idea… It does take an effort to sit down and write.
But there are many upsides –
- It does not need to be perfect or even close to perfect writing just be you
- Writing your story could very possible help you understand your life and where it has gone and why you are in the place you are in.
- You may surprise yourself with all the things you have learned along the way
- When sharing your Story you could possibly help others
- You are leaving part of your legacy in writing for many to enjoy!
One last important piece of information… please don’t worry about what others may think of your story, your style or the arrangement of chapters, do what you feel is right.
My first book was full of typos… when I was asked about it I explained that most of the stories came directly from my journals on the trail of the John Muir Trail where. I wrote just about every night after walking up to 9 miles, trekked over a 12,000 foot peaks or having walked for 9 hours straight during a rain storm. By the time I journaled I was exhausted. I further explained that I did not fix the typos in my book because I wanted to portray the real fear and exhaustion I was feeling by not caring about the spelling errors at that moment. The person who asked me “why typos” later wrote me to say, “I get it”. BAM
Here is your first prompt – What story would you like to tell about your life?
So, start writing….
