Spending time with my dad is always a crap shoot as to where it will go. I mean dementia is real and so are the voices, the unreal stories, an imagination from outer space and that reality is true to a person with dementia. Maybe this is a whole other blog but the thing that hit me years ago was that my dad also wanted to write a book, to tell his story, to share the good, the bad and the mysteries to being successful. But the truth of the matter is he is now 90 can’t remember what he had for breakfast let along seeing his grandson last night but ill be dammed that he can always remember that he wanted to write a book but knows now it is to late….
Move forward to my drive home where I do my best thinking. Everyone has a story they are dying to tell, whether it’s for personal eyes only or to share with your friends and family it is time to be reminded that it is OK to go ahead, let your words be the hero and give yourself a chance to be heard, lol. You might be surprised to find out this could be a key element to living your legacy life!
At some point, we’ve all heard that our inner storyteller is always wanting to break free and share the stories right! Crafting a memoir, whether kept in your personal journal or shared with others, is like a good therapy season, that lets you not only reflect on your adventures but do it with your own unique flair.
We all have those moments we’re dying to write down – whether it’s venting, unraveling old anxieties, or simply throwing long lost feelings on the page. No one says you must share it; heck, you might even want to write your masterpiece without a single glance. Telling your story isn’t about being the next million-dollar author; it’s about putting in the time to turn your memories into a captivating tale knowing in the end that it is for you.
But guess what? We all crave an audience. I mean we all share stories everyday right. Sharing your story, whether it’s with a buddy or a book club, gives you a connection to others. Writing down your experiences can also be a journey of self-discovery. (I talk about journalling a lot). When you finally put down that pen or close the screen on your computer, you might look back and surprise yourself with what you’ve written. It might even uncover new layers of wisdom or send you down the tunnel into finding out about your roots, identity, and future – all through the magic of your words. Let your writing be your compass, forget about what the peanut gallery might think of your narrative, your writing style, or your choice of words. A close friend of mine once told me to write my way and others will feel it, I did, and I found her guidance was spot on!!!
One last thing, some say that putting your feelings and perceptions into a personal narrative isn’t just good for the soul, it’s a health boost that keeps on giving. While you’re journaling your story, remember to cut yourself some slack, I mean there is a lot to tell for any human no matter your age! Most importantly, you’re writing about your legacy that will live on forever, giving yourself a timeless gift, and letting your voice echo through the ages, lol!
Ok your turn! Start….
